Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces and reshapes the labia minora, the skin that surrounds the vaginal opening. Labiaplasty can be performed on one or both sides of the labia. Labial enlargement is usually congenital, but can also be caused by hormonal changes or childbirth.
In most women, the labia minora can only be seen when the legs are separated or apart. However, there are some women where the labia are quite visible even when the legs are together or barely separated. Women often dislike the large protuberant appearance of the labia minora and labiaplasty is a procedure to remedy that problem. There are two broad reasons why women desire labiaplasty: medical reasons and cosmetic reasons.
Medical reasons for labiaplasty include constant irritation of the labia in tight pants and discomfort while engaging in sports and other physical activities. Sometimes enlarged labia can cause discomfort during intercourse.
Cosmetic reasons for labiaplasty include self-consciousness or embarrassment about the size or shape of the labia minora. Some patients are so sensitive about this problem that they harbor secret feelings about being deformed and abnormal, suffer loss of self-esteem, and may even distance themselves from their sexual partners. Some patients feel embarrassed when wearing swimsuits and other revealing or form-fitting clothing.
Traditionally labiaplasty was performed by excising the protuberant labia minora and over-sewing the raw edge. By today's standards, this is considered old-fashioned and sub-optimal because the natural contour, shape, and color of the labia edge is eliminated. In its place is often a tight, firm, scar line which is lighter in color than the normal labial tissue.
Modern labiaplasty [superior wedge resection and superior pedicle flap reconstruction] preserves the normal labial contours, colors, and anatomy of the natural labial edge. The excessive and protuberant labial tissue is removed in a "V" manner at the far end of the labia [away from the clitoris], and the remaining labial tissues are sutured together. The resultant suture line is very inconspicuous. The resulting labia minora appears completely normal and has normal sensation.
Patient satisfaction with labiaplasty is exceptionally high.
